But the bottom line is, especially in the case of children, pool alarms save lives. Here's how to shop for one.
Step1 Check out Consumer Reports Pool Alarms Ratings online or in the June issue of the magazine. There are many pool alarms that are not recommended because they did not perform well in tests. Consumer Reports did recommend the Poolguard brand alarms in both an above-ground pool model and in ground pool alarm model.
Step2 Shop for the pool alarm after choosing it based on published reviews and ratings. Look online or order it through your local pool supply store. Call pool service companies near you if you can't find it in a local store.
Step3 Test the pool alarm after setting it up according to manufacturer's instructions, making sure that it works as it should. Test weekly while your pool is in use.
Step4 Fence your pool and follow local laws regarding pool safety, including locked gates, warning signs, and rescue equipment on hand.
